Diagnosis and non-operative care for injuries and pain.

For athletes and active adults who want a clear answer, a plan built around their activity, and a measured path back to it.

WHAT WE FOCUS ON

Common reasons patients come to us.

If it limits how you move, train or live, it is worth an evaluation. These are some of the conditions we see most often.

  • Tendon pain

Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff, elbow and hip tendinopathy.

  • Sprains & strains

Ankle, knee and muscle injuries, from first visit to full load.

  • Joint pain & osteoarthritis

Knee, hip, shoulder and hand, with options beyond rest.

  • Overuse injuries

Shin splints, stress reactions and repetitive-load problems.

  • Back & neck pain

Mechanical pain assessed in the context of how you move.

  • Return to activity

Clearance and progression after injury, surgery or time off.

HOW CARE WORKS

From first visit to full activity.

01
Evaluate

A diagnosis that explains why

Your first visit is a full physician-level evaluation: history, examination, movement and in-office diagnostic ultrasound when it helps.

  • 60-minute first visit
  • Diagnostic ultrasound in the room
  • Review of prior imaging and records
02
Treat

The intervention matches the problem

Treatment is chosen for your diagnosis and goals. That may be a targeted rehabilitation plan, an image-guided injection or an orthobiologic option where the procedure is appropriate.

  • Ultrasound-guided precision
  • Non-operative options first
  • Clear discussion of evidence and cost
03
Progress

Load intelligently, return with confidence

Recovery is measured. We progress loading with our movement specialist and re-test before you return to full activity.

  • Structured loading plan
  • Strength and movement re-testing
  • Return-to-activity criteria

PATIENT STORIES

Back to what matters.

[Sample] I came in expecting a cortisone shot. I left understanding why my knee kept flaring up, and six months later I am surfing again.
[Patient name] — Surfer, Carlsbad
[Sample] Dr. Burman looked at the whole picture — training, sleep, work. The plan made sense, and the progress was measurable.
[Patient name] — Trail runner, Encinitas
[Sample] I am not an athlete. I just wanted to garden and walk without pain. They treated that goal as seriously as anyone else’s.

QUESTIONS

Before your first visit.

Do I need a referral?
You can contact SALUS directly to request an appointment. If you plan to use insurance, your plan may require a referral or prior authorization. Please contact our team before your visit to confirm insurance participation and any requirements.
I already have an MRI or X-ray. How do I send it?
Upload it securely before your visit on our Upload your imaging page. It takes about five minutes, and Dr. Burman reviews your images before you arrive.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Bring any relevant imaging and reports, previous treatment records, and a current list of medications and supplements. For X-rays or MRIs, bring access to the actual images when possible. Wear comfortable clothing that allows us to examine the affected area, and tell us which activities you want to return to.
Will I need an injection?
Not necessarily. We begin by understanding your symptoms, examining how you move, and identifying the problem. Your plan may include education, activity adjustments, and progressive strengthening. An injection is considered only when it fits your diagnosis and goals, after discussing the potential benefits, risks, alternatives, and cost.
Are orthobiologic treatments covered by insurance?
Orthobiologic treatments, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), are generally self-pay services. Medicare does not cover PRP injections for musculoskeletal injuries or joint conditions, and commercial coverage varies. We will explain the recommended treatment and associated costs before you decide to proceed. Any potentially covered evaluation or other services are reviewed separately.
